Jeroen Elfferich: Hypnotic and Groovy pianist from Holland
Dutch composer and musician. He studied percussion at the Rotterdam Conservatorium. His music is a kind of minimal music with an emphasis on rhythms and different time signatures, which makes his music hypnotic and groove-based.
Jeroen was kind enough to give us an interview, through which you will get to know him and his beautiful music better. Enjoy
What is your music about?
My music is about everyday life in general, dreams and going to imaginary places
What are your goals as an artist artistically/commercially?
My goals are to reach as many people as possible, being appreciated by music critics and commercially …well … maybe earn some money too.
Who would you want as a dream producer, and why?
Well I really want to keep producing my own music.
What are you trying to avoid as a musician?
Sound like any other musician/artist
Explain your composing process.
It always start with fooling around ( improvise) on an instrument ( piano, guitar) and try to make something out of a simple pattern, riff or rhythm.
Why do you make the music you make? Is it in you? Is it your environment?
I make the music I make because it comes naturally and I can’t help it. I believe the music is inside a music instrument, all I do is getting the music out of the instrument and by constantly playing and understanding this instrument new songs/compositions keep coming.
Describe your palette of sound.
My music is all about rhythm and sound. It’s like the old jazz tune “It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing”. The polyrhythms create a kind of hypnotic and meditative atmosphere. I also like to use a lot of space and repetitions.
As a trained musician and composer is it easier of more difficult to create music?
I am a trained musician but try to forget all the rules when I am composing. Sometimes I know how to use music theory when I need it but most of the time I trust my ears because they are the real judge and not something out of a book.
