COSMOS IN COLLISION’S INTERVIEW

Who are the members?

I’m a musician and producer based in Italy. In 2003 I became a member of Ataraxia as percussionist. Since then the band has released eleven albums and performed concerts in Europe, South America and China.

In 2011 I began working on my solo live looping project Masala. In 2012 I joined the post-rock band Amp Rive as drummer and at the end of the same year, closed Masala’s experience, I started a new ambient/electronic project called [FRAGMENTS], then renamed Cosmos in Collision in 2014.

How did you come up with your name?

I liked the word Cosmos, so inspired by the song Worlds in Collision by God is an astronaut I found the right name.

What is your music about?

My music is instrumental and I don't want to give it a precise meaning. I let the listener be free to be inspired and associated with my music what he prefers

What are your goals as an artist artistically/commercially?

Transport the listener to another dimension

What are you trying to avoid as a band?

I would like to avoid that my music sounds boring and repetitive

Why do you make the music you make? Is it in you? Is it your environment?

I’ve always loved contamination and don’t believe too much in definitions and musical genres.

I play the music what I like, and I think that it's a synthesis of the music that I prefer.

What inspire you for the music or for the Lyrics?

Sometimes I sit in the studio and nothing comes out, sometimes the music flows like a waterfall, I’ve not yet fully understood what is the trigger for my creative process. By the way most of the ideas come to me when I drive alone

Tell us what you are looking when trying to achieve your sounds. Do you experiment a lot or have a clear idea of what you want?

I almost always quite clear the sound I have in mind, the hard part is being able to put it into practice.

Explain your songwriting process.

Sometime I start recording in Ableton Live a beat, or a bass line, or a simple tune and start looping it, trying to find the right melodies. When I have a couple of nice melodies, I start to arrange the song. I use midi instruments in the songwriting process, because is easy to quick change a note or a chord.

When a rough arrangement is ready I proceed to find the right sound of the synths and drums that fit well with the song.

Describe your palette of sound.

Floating guitars, soaring synths, fat basses, stratified drums patterns

Who would you want as a dream producer, and why?

Uh, I never thought about it!

If you could guest on someone else’s album, who would it be and why? What would you play?

Can I play drums on next Russian Circles album?

What musical skills would you like to acquire or get better at?

Mainly I'm a drummer and the music theory is a dark matter for me, so I'd like to learn more about it

Which other musician/artist would you date?

Daughter’s Elena Tonra

Is there a band that if they didn’t exist you wouldn’t be making the music you make?

I think that Tycho’s albums “Awake” and “Dive” gave me the drive to start with this project

You are from Italy what are the advantages and inconvenient?

I think there are advantages and inconvenient like all other countries. However, it’s sad to note that the places dedicated to a certain type of music are constantly decreasing

What are some places around the world that you hope to play with your band?

I have played a lot around the world with my main band Ataraxia, but never in the USA, so that would be nice to play there

When is the next album/EP due?

Backlit, my first full length album will be released by Shore Dive Records on November 23rd
