GARDEN TAPES’ INTERVIEW

Who are the group members?

Christian Dam, Fredrik Ness Sevendal

How did you meet?

At school 25 years ago.

How did you come up with your name?

Our first rehersal was in a garden house and we do like tapes. We didn’t know about the Led Zeppelin box set with the same title.

What is your music about?

Escaping everyday life a little bit. Make our own world of sound, go with the flow and enter a comfortable, calm and inspiring place while we play.

What are your goals as an artist artistically/commercially?

To enjoy ourselves.

What are you trying to avoid as a band?

Not enjoying ourselves

Why do you make the music you make? Is it in you? Is it your environment?

Because we love to make drones and repetitive music. It’s highly enjoyable and calming.

What inspire you for the music or for the Lyrics?

Deep forests, beer, music, anything that get us away from the everyday life.

Tell us what you are looking when trying to achieve your sounds. Do you experiment a lot or have a clear idea of what you want?

Usually Christian comes up with a song, chords and lyrics and then we start improvising together on those themes. Sometimes we put a lot of effort in the mix.

Explain your songwriting process.

Same as above.

Describe your palette of sound.

Simple pop tunes immersed in drones and soundscapes.

Who would you want as a dream producer, and why?

Ourselves! The production is a big part of our music, we can’t leave that to anyone else. But getting help from an excellent studio technician would off course be nice.

If you could guest on someone else’s album, who would it be and why? What would you play?

Hm..hard question. There’s so many.

What musical skills would you like to acquire or get better at?

Playing organ and accordion maybe.

Which other musician/artist would you date?

Fredrik: I already date a excellent musician. My wife.

Christian: Sanae Yamada from Moon Duo. She makes cool sounds, and i like her hair.

Is there a band that if they didn’t exist you wouldn’t be making the music you make?

Ohh theres so many, but to name just a few; Dinosaur Jr, Skullflower, The dead
C, Gate, Omit, Slayer, Enslaved, Bardo Pond, Tony Conrad, Sonic youth, Jessamine, Terry Riley, Charlemagne Palestin, Roky Erickson, Steel pole bathtub, Spacemen 3, Smog, Ornette Coleman, Vangelis…and so much more.

You are from Norway what are the advantages and inconvenient?

Norway. The best thing about Norway is the deep forests and the mountains. Also, a lot of nice bands come here to play.

What are some places around the world that you hope to play with your band?

Utopia or Atlatis

When is the next album/EP due?

An EP, hopefully this autum.

Some artists you recommend.

Same as the music that inspire us I guess

Anything else you want your fans to know?

Nope
